This month at Mi Casa we are proud to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated September 15th through October 15th, is a time to cherish the myriad of cultures and contributions within Latin America and Spanish-speaking countries. We at Mi Casa Inc, honor this month as the Latino community is close to the heart of Mi Casa’s work: We are one of DC’s only nonprofit developers to focus on the housing needs of low-income Latinos, and Mi Casa was the first and remains the only Latino-led, bilingual (Spanish/English) non-profit housing developer in the District.

Mi Casa Inc was founded by Executive Director Fernando Lemos, who saw the need for an expansion of affordable homeownership in the District and established Mi Casa on the principle that everyone has the right to a safe, affordable, and well-designed place to call home.

“Housing is a human right. Housing is something that everyone needs and there’s no difference between Latinos, and African American and North American citizens,” said Fernando Lemos of Mi Casa’s mission to provide affordable housing for all.

When Mi Casa was founded in 1992, its original focus was on serving the Latino community through the creation of opportunities for affordable homeownership, to which immigrant communities and other people of color had historically been denied equitable access. Since then Mi Casa has expanded its work to provide additional affordable housing opportunities through our affordable rental program and our work with limited equity cooperatives. Our work still benefits Latino and Hispanic communities and now, our programs reach hundreds of low-income, African, Latino, and African-American residents in the District each year.

Mi Casa Inc believes in the power of diversity and we say thank you to all our Latina and Latino staff who make it possible for Mi Casa to continue to provide quality affordable housing to households with low- and moderate-income throughout Washington DC.
