Senior man reading to young girl in Genesis library

At Genesis, young moms who grew up in foster care live alongside seniors living on fixed incomes and other community-minded families.

Launched in November 2015 and located at Mi Casa’s affordable rental property 6925 Georgia Ave NW, Genesis is based on a national model of intergenerational communities in which older adults provide meaningful care and social support to individuals and families facing particular vulnerabilities, who in turn, promote the well-being of the elders as they age. At Genesis, young moms who grew up in foster care live alongside seniors living on fixed incomes and other community-minded families.

Genesis is housed in a 27-unit affordable rental building developed by Mi Casa in partnership with city agencies. Specially designed for the Intergenerational program, the building features a community kitchen, meeting room, garden, and library.
Genesis program staff facilitate community engagement within the intergenerational community, and provide individual support to the families, children, and seniors living there, as well as linkages to outside social services.

Genesis came about through an initiative launched by the city’s Child and Family Services Agency, with the help of Generations of Hope (GOH), a national expert in intergenerational communities. A committee of expert stakeholders and community partners help shape the program.

The Genesis Community

“The relationships at Genesis help me see myself differently, to believe I can achieve my dreams and be there so my kids can too.”

At Genesis the age gap is a resource, not a challenge.

Mi Casa developed the building that houses the intergenerational program.

Shared spaces include this children’s library.
